Herbal Garden

The herbal Garden of Institute of Post Graduate Ayurvedic Education & Research, Kolkata at Eco Park has been prepared, which was inaugurated by the Chief Minister in the month of October 2015. The Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation (HIDCO) under the Govt of West Bengal has allotted 3 acres area of plot in the ongoing project of 480 green acres land of Eco- Tourism park to this Institute. The department of Health & Family Welfare has sanctioned and released the total fund to prepare and also maintain this garden which was done authorized department by the HIDCO ie Public Health Engineering (PHE) department of Govt. of West Bengal because they have prepared another garden in this area as per proposed sketch of the garden. There are more than 80,000 visitors have visited this garden since the Oct.2015 till now as per data recorded in the register and appreciated by given their comments such as very good garden, have not seen previous this type of garden having detailed information mentioned in the permanent label of each plant species.

The herbal garden (One Acre) is one of the most important parameter of prescribed MSR of CCIM for the affiliation of this Institution. The team of CCIM and examiners from all over India, Scientist of different departments have appreciated this garden and said this type of garden have not seen till now in the India or may be in World because it is well organized and good presentation and said to the thanks to department of H& FW for taking this type of initiation. The permission for the admission of students for the Postgraduate courses has been given on the basis of minimum infrastructure, faculty, herbal garden & hospital facilities etc. by the Central Council of Indian Medicine and Department of AYUSH, New Delhi. As per Central Council of Indian Medicine (CCIM) rules for affiliation of the Postgraduate Ayurvedic courses in the Post Graduate Institute, it should have well established herbal garden more than 250 plant species and more than 5000 plants are planted. This Institute is also under West Bengal University of Health Sciences, Kolkata. This Herbal Garden showcasing more than 250 medicinal plant species along with their therapeutic actions is an extension part of the Institute of Post Graduate Ayurvedic Education & Research at Shyamadas Vaidya Shastra Pith under the Health & Family Welfare Department, Government of West Bengal.

The main hospital building and campus of the Institute is located at- 294/3/1 A.P.C.ROAD, KOLKATA-700009. The Institute imparts education and undertakes research activities for the post graduate students and Ph.D scholars in Ayurveda.

The aim and objective of the garden was submitted during the time of allotment of land to the HIDCO given below :

Aim & Objective of the Herbal garden :

The main aim is to explore the importance of medicinal plants for the treatment and prevention of the diseases for National and International people through Eco Tourism park. This herbal garden will provide the therapeutic knowledge of medicinal plants and also awareness of Ayurvedic treatment for the curing of the diseases to the people of all age groups who visits to eco-tourism Park. It is a direct source to reach to the common people for exploring the importance of medicinal plants and their uses. The following objectives are :

To explore the traditional knowledge on the basis of identification and their therapeutic uses to the undergraduate and postgraduate Ayurvedic students, research scholars, students of the botany and pharmacy department and other related departments of universities.

To continue the affiliation of the department of Dravyaguna and also institute for maintaining the minimum standard prescribed by the CCIM for academic purpose.

Since a large number of visitors visit Eco Tourism Park daily, it will increase awareness about important medicinal herbal plants among them because more than 70 % people depend upon traditional system of medicine especially medicinal plants as per WHO.

It will also promote public awareness and knowledge about Ayurvedic System of Medicine by using the medicinal plants based on their therapeutic uses.

It will enhance the attractiveness and ambience and name of the institute of post Graduate Ayurvedic Education & Research under department of Health & Family Welfare, Govt. of West Bengal.

There are presently more than 5000 medicinal plants located in the specific prepared separate 250 types of bed for each species of medicinal plants and displayed with permanent labels having photograph, scientific name and therapeutic uses for the identification.

This garden is also having good quality of class room with all types of facilities for the demonstration of the medicinal plant through practical classes and also seminar in this garden. All said activates are going on in regular basis.

This garden maybe the one of the best quality of herbal garden in the India as per recommendation by the scientists of national & international.

Permission for opening of Ayurvedic Health Awareness System of Medicines to the visitors at Herbal Garden of IPGAE&R, Kolkata at Eco- Tourism Park in the classroom for Saturday and Sunday initially timing evening at 5pm- 7 pm in summer and also distributing the pamphlet having address of the Institute and facilities for the patients has also obtained. The postgraduate students and physician will attend this health check up on said time. This unit will be started very soon.

Permission for selling some samples of plants to the visitors in the dried powder of the sample, raw green plants sample for cultivation which has mentioned in the agreement with HIDCO. The received fund will be transferred 50% - 50% to the HIDCO and Institute. Because it has been observed that some plants can sell to the visitors and others such as plants Aloe vera, Vasak, Kalmegh, Different types of Tulsi etc.
